Kochi: When Rubin was born into this world, his parents never knew that he was born with a fatal rare genetic disease called primary hyperoxaluria. Rubin was born in a poor family in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. The family was devastated when they learned that his both kidneys had stopped working and he had to undergo frequent dialysis to sustain his life. His parents learned from the doctors that transplanting both liver and kidney was the only curative option available. Their search for a best multiorgan transplantation team ended at In fact, Kerala's first successful combined liver and kidney transplantation for primary hyperoxaluria was performed by Dr Venugopal who is currently the chief of surgical gastroenterology and liver transplantation unit at Lisie hospital. As the mother was the only eligible organ donor in the family, the doctors at the Lisi Hospital decided to do a liver transplant first, followed by a kidney transplant three months later.
A lot of kind-hearted people and non-profit organizations came forward to help Rubin's family. The management of Lisie Hospital offered a subsidized package for liver transplantion and also free dialysis after liver transplant until kidney transplantation. His mother donated the left lobe of her liver to him last month and the entire procedure went smoothly. Apart from Dr. Venugopal, Dr. Fadl H. Veerankutty, Dr. Shaji Ponnambathayil, Dr. Prameel from the department of liver transplant surgery and Dr. Rajeev, Dr. Vineeth and Dr. Vishnu from transplant anesthesia team also participated in the surgery.
When Grace Antony learned of Ruben's story, she wanted to visit Ruben at hospital and comfort him. On the day of his discharge from the hospital, Rubin was thrilled to meet the movie star unexpectedly. Dr. Fadl, consultant liver transplant surgeon at Lisie hospital gave a detailed description of the disease to the actress. Primary hyperoxaluria is a rare genetic condition present at birth. In this condition, the liver doesn't synthesize enough of a certain protein (enzyme) that prevents overproduction of oxalate. The prognosis of primary hyperoxaluria depends on the type, time of diagnosis, and early initiation of treatment, amongst other things. Excess oxalate is eliminated through kidneys, in the urine. But the extra oxalate can combine with calcium to create kidney stones and crystals, which can damage the kidneys and cause them to stop working (renal failure). Because the body can no longer eliminate the extra oxalate, it starts accumulating — first in blood, then in eyes, bones, skin, muscles, blood vessels, heart and other organs causing damage to all these organs. Kidney dialysis may help temporarily, but it doesn't keep up with the amount of oxalate produced. As the basic problem lies within the liver, transplanting kidney alone without a liver transplant will not cure the disease.
Rubin’s mother is now full set to donate one of her kidneys too to her beloved son after two months. Dr. Fr. Paul karedan, the director of Lisie Hospital, thanked Grace Antony for finding out time from her busy schedule to spend with needy patients like Rubin.
